What is Personality Disorder?

No comments :
Personality disorders are a group of mental health conditions in which an individual differs significantly from an average person, in terms of how they think, perceive, feel or relate to others. Those who struggle with a personality disorder have great difficulty dealing with other people. They tend to be inflexible, rigid, and unable to respond to the changes and demands of life. Although they feel that their behavior patterns are “normal” or “right,” people with personality disorders tend to have a narrow view of the world and find it difficult to participate in social activities.

Individuals who commonly suffer from personality disorders include:

•    People who seem unable to manage their lives and relationships
•    Those who seek psychiatric services long term
•    Prisoners.

The main symptoms are:

•    Frequent mood swings
•    Odd behaviour
•    Stormy relationships
•    Avoiding other people
•    Suspicion and mistrust of others
•    Difficulty making friends
•    Poor impulse control
•    Alcohol or substance abuse
•    Being overwhelmed by negative feelings such as distress, anxiety, worthlessness or anger.

Personality disorders typically emerge in adolescence and continue into adulthood. Causes of personality disorders are unknown. Its may be associated with genetic and family factors. Experiences of distress or fear during childhood, such as neglect or abuse, are common cause of personality disorders.
